Always appreciate your reminders of all the comforts we enjoy in very recent times. I think of those who cannot escape extreme conditions (migrant farm workers, construction workers, animals in factories/trucks etc) during heat waves (or most recently for our location in Greece, smoke-waves).
Hmm, could I ask for enough money that I could use it to change the world, even as I (alone) lived like I was backpacking and died from preventable disease? I might take that. I would definitely take that at some point of aging or infirmity.
Setting aside that interpretation, I counted over 1/3 of those that I would not give up all of, or any large subset of, for any amount of compensation (so long as I can keep managing to have enough money to get by -- I might be willing to see some of them to avoid poverty even at the modern Western level). I would be willing to sell a few of them (if it were just me giving it up) for enough money though. There were several more that I though "fine with me, I am not really in the market for [marriage equality, etc.]", though the condition that people I care about would have to give them up would make them a nonstarter for me accepting. (Hmm, would I sell them for enough money that I could sufficiently lavishly compensate those I love for not having that anymore?)
Ok, fine. I understand, of course, your very solid point and that such tangential calculations are the games used by people who are trying to subvert the message. I'll stop. :-)
You reminded me of someone I knew in the tobacco harm reduction advocacy world back in the emerging days of vaping, who insisted that e-cigarettes were the most important technology in their life, having finally been their path to quitting and staying off smoking. I asked if they would really give up indoor plumbing before they would give up ecigs (and thus either fight their way through having no nicotine or try to get used to using snus or just give up and go back to smoking, but to not have to collect water from outside and use an outhouse). They insisted yes, but I never really believed it.
