Great post, Matt! The recidivism part of your post reminds me of three recent things I read. The first is a fitness instructor I used to follow, who said that after 7 years she stopped being vegan because she could not keep weight *on* (she said she was eating 12 bananas a day to try, which lead one commenter to conclude she was on the fringe raw vegan diet). Then I read that Rick Rubin stopped being vegan after 20+ years because he could not keep weight OFF (he admitted he was sedentary and not eating well though). Last, a former acquaintance shared he stopped being veg after becoming an endurance athlete.

I could point to award-winning vegan endurance athletes like Scott Jurek until I am blue in the face (which would be mistaken for a B12 deficiency) or I could point to stats that show a whole foods plant-based diet leads mostly to a healthy BMI, but people will continue to justify their choice of the default diet in a myriad of creative ways. The default diet--what we are competing with when trying to encourage leaving the animals off the plate--is simply more convenient. Then the question is--what do we do with this fact?
